You know that kind of craving that won’t leave you alone? The one that takes you straight to those corner takeaways wrapped in paper, hot, salty, a little messy… and perfect. Wena Tamati SOSO wena Albany White bread and the vinegar just slaps your nose, and there's 8 of you sharing the meal, mara it's only enough for 3 people? Lol, you get it right?
That was me two days ago. I could already taste the vinegar, the slap chips, that crispy fish. Yoh.
But this time, I said, let’s do it at home, served on Plate style. Same comfort, same nostalgia… just a little twist.
So instead of the usual bread on the side, I went for something lighter, fresh salads. A cucumber and feta situation with baby tomatoes, and a proper creamy coleslaw with that tang that hits just right.
And chommie… it still felt like home. Just fresher.
🐟 Served on Plate Fish & Slap Chips (with a fresh twist)
Serves: 4 people
🐟 Crispy Fried Fish
Ingredients:
4–6 fish fillets (hake works best)
1 cup flour
2 eggs
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp fish spice
½ tsp Aromat
Salt & pepper
Oil (for deep frying)
Method:
Season fish with fish spice, Aromat, onion powder, salt & pepper
In a bowl, beat the eggs.
Coat fish in flour → dip in egg → back into flour
Heat the oil until hot.
Deep fry until golden and crispy (about 4–5 mins)
Remove and drain on a paper towel.
🍟 Classic Slap Chips
Ingredients:
Potatoes (cut into thick chips)
Oil (for frying)
Aromat
Vinegar
Method:
Fry chips until soft (first fry)
Remove and rest
Fry again until slightly golden but still soft inside.
Season with Aromat
Splash vinegar while hot
👉 That soft, slightly soggy, salty goodness, that’s the goal.
🥗 Creamy Coleslaw
Ingredients:
Green cabbage (shredded)
Red cabbage (shredded)
1 carrot (grated)
¼ red onion (thinly sliced)
3 tbsp mayonnaise
Salt & pepper
1 tbsp lemon juice
Method:
Combine all veggies
Add mayo, salt & pepper.
Finish with lemon juice.
Mix and chill
🥒 Cucumber, Feta & Tomato Salad
Ingredients:
Cucumber (sliced)
Baby tomatoes
Feta cheese
Herbs (your choice)
Vinaigrette dressing
Salt
Method:
Toss everything together
Lightly season
Chill before serving
💡 Tips for that perfect plate
Don’t overcrowd your oil → fish won’t crisp properly.
Double-fry chips for that soft inside texture
Always season immediately after frying
Balance is everything: crispy fish + soft chips + fresh salad.
